Wallet Safety Checklist

Most self-custody losses come from a small number of preventable mistakes, not from the technology failing. This checklist turns the safety guidance from our guides into a concrete list you can work through, in order, before and after you set up a wallet. Work top to bottom — the early items protect the later ones.

The full reasoning behind each item lives in protecting your recovery phrase, avoiding scams, and moving crypto to a hardware wallet. This checklist is the quick reference.

Work through the list

0 of 10 complete

Your progress is kept only in this browser. It is saved to this device only if you tick "remember," and never sent anywhere. Nothing about your wallets, keys, or balances is ever requested.

The two items that matter most are 4 and 8. Keeping the recovery phrase fully offline, and verifying every address on the device's own screen. Every other item reinforces those two. If you do nothing else, do those.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to complete every item?

For anything you intend to hold long-term, yes — work through all of them. For a tiny, short-term experiment you're not serious about keeping, the risk is smaller, but items 4 and 8 (offline phrase, verify on the device) still apply to any self-custody, however small.

Where is my progress stored?

Only in this browser, on this device, and only if you tick "remember my progress." It's a convenience so you don't lose your place — it has no access to your wallet or keys, and it's never transmitted. You can clear it with Reset, or by clearing your browser's local storage.

I already made one of these mistakes. Now what?

If you photographed or uploaded your recovery phrase, delete every copy (including cloud syncs) and, to be safe, move your coins to a brand-new wallet with a fresh phrase — treat the exposed one as burned. If you sent to an unverified address, the transaction is likely irreversible, which is exactly why the test-transfer and on-device-verification steps exist. See scam awareness.
